Interesting technique to photograph 3D Human Brain

The study of the brain is a most needed one for the medical industry to save the mankind from Brain disorders. A good study of a brain involves the gathering of information about the connections between the neurons.

In order to study a Brain, it must be photographed by the electron microscope. To achieve this, it will be fixed in a chemical fluid. But this technique causes the brain to shrink its physical structure. So the distance between each and every neurons becomes smaller than that in the normal Brain. This produces a photograph with a very lesser information.

To overcome this situation, Scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) have found a method called “Cryofixation”. In this technique, the Brain will be rapidly cooled with the help of liquid nitrogen in a high pressure.

By doing so, the water within the brain will not form as crystals as it becomes when got cooled in a refrigerator. Instead it becomes as glass like appearance. This is done because the water crystals in a brain will damage the tissue

This technique prevents the Brain from shrinking and thus preserves the Brain to remain as it is. After the rapid freezing process, the frozen Brain is allowed to be fixed in a resin. After some days, the glassified water is pushed out gently and slowly from the Brain.

So, thus a Brain got cryofixed and made ready to take 3D photograph with the electron microscope using this new technique without allowing any changes in the entire structure of that Brain.

At last, the researchers compared the 3D images of the previous method of “only chemical” method with the 3D images of “Cryofixation” method. It is found that the image of Cryofixation method provides more information than the image of previous chemical method.

Let us hope that this improvement in the study of Brain will remain as a significant turning point in medical history.
